There are several allowable deductions from household income before gross household income is determined to establish eligibility and benefits levels for food stamps:
· A standard deduction based on household size and other rules
· An earned income deduction equaling 20% of household gross monthly earned income
· A deduction for medical expense(s) in excess of $35 per month when incurred by an elderly or disabled household member
· The actual costs of dependent care necessary for a household member to accept or continue employment, comply with the Food Stamp Employment & Training Program requirements, or to attend training or education, not to exceed $200 per month for each child under age two and $175 per month for all other dependents
· Monthly shelter expenses in excess of 50% of the household’s income after all of the above deductions have been allowed, capped at a level adjusted annually (see the Food Stamp Income Tests topic for current cap level), unless the household includes a member who is elderly or disabled. The shelter expenses include rent or mortgage and utility expenses. The utility expenses can be actual utility expense or one of three possible Standard Utility Allowances.
· Legally obligated child support
