The Food Stamp Program allows low-income households to purchase food they need to have good nutrition. It is administered by the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA).
The amount of food stamp benefits is based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) estimates of how much it costs to provide a household with nutritious, low-cost meals. The amount of the benefits is determined based on household income and the cost of shelter and utilities.
Eligibility for food stamps and the benefit levels for applicant households are determined through a certification process. Households are required to go through standard application procedures and to provide certain verifications to support facts provided during certification.
NOTE: WorkWORLD can calculate eligibility and benefit levels for Food Stamps. After completing questions concerning SSI/DI, answer YES to the question, "Do you want WorkWORLD to calculate results for Food Stamps in this situation?"
The Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) and the national and regional offices of the Food and Consumer Service (FCS) of USDA maintain information about policies, regulations, notices, and procedures associated with the Food Stamps Program. The USDA provides a national toll-free hotline number for callers to leave messages about information they would like to receive by mail about the program. Additionally, Massachusetts operates a State Food Stamp Information/Hotline you can use to get information and answers to Food Stamp questions. See the Food Stamp State Information/Hotline Numbers topic for more information.
NOTE: Regulations for Food Stamps benefits are in the Code of Massachusetts Regulations (CMR) at 106 CMR 360-367. They are available in PDF format at http://www.mass.gov/portal/index.jsp?pageID=eohhs2subtopic&L=5&L0=Home&L1=Government&L2=Laws%2c+Regulations+and+Policies&L3=Transitional+Assistance+Regulations&L4=106+CMR+360-367+Food+Stamps+Program&sid=Eeohhs2.
