Child Support Deduction - SNAP (Food Stamps)

In the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly Food Stamp Program), the Child Support Deduction allows households to deduct the costs of legally-obligated child support payments paid by a household member to or for a non-household member, including payments made to a third party on behalf of the non-household member. Amounts paid toward arrearages are also deductible. However, alimony payments made to or for a non-household member are not included when applying the Child Support Deduction.

The Child Support Deduction is used to calculate your household's net income, and in fact, it reduces your household's net income. By reducing the amount of net income that is counted when determining whether a household meets the net income test or when calculating the level of benefits for a household, the Child Support Deduction allows households to have higher incomes and still qualify for benefits. In addition, it helps a household to receive higher benefits.
