Household Size - SNAP (Food Stamps)

Picture of group of people.Everyone who usually lives together, and purchases and prepares meals together is grouped together as one household for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly Food Stamp Program) purposes. When WorkWORLD asks this question, you should enter the number of people, including yourself, who normally do this in your situation.

Income and resource eligibility is determined on the basis of households, and benefits are distributed on the basis of households.

A household can consist of:

·        An individual living alone;

·        An individual living with others but who customarily purchases food and prepares meals for home consumption separate and apart from others; or

·        A group of people who live together and customarily purchase food and prepare meals for home consumption together.

Some people who live together must be included in the same SNAP (Food Stamps) household even if they purchase and prepare meals separately, such as husbands and wives and most children under age 22.

In addition, certain people must be excluded from any SNAP household, such as ineligible students, parole violators, and disqualified individuals.

If someone is a disabled, elderly person, he or she and his or her spouse may be able to form their own household even if they prepare meals with others.

In addition, generally speaking, residents in institutional settings cannot participate. However, there are some exceptions. For example, disabled or blind individuals who are residents of group living arrangements (i.e., a public or private nonprofit residential setting that serves no more than sixteen residents and is certified by the appropriate state agency) and residents of Federally subsidized housing for the elderly may be eligible for SNAP.

If the household passes the program's eligibility tests, the amount of SNAP benefits received will depend on the number of people in the household and on how much monthly net income is left after certain expenses (deductions) are subtracted.
