Certain people must be included and others must be excluded from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly Food Stamp Program) households. In addition, the presence of certain individuals may disqualify an entire household.
The following people must be included in the same household:
· people who live together and buy and prepare food together must be in the same unit;
· children and stepchildren who live with their parent(s) and are under age 22 must be in the same food stamp unit as their parent(s), regardless of whether they also live with their spouse and/or children or purchase and prepare food separately;
· foster children and adults who live with their foster parent(s) may be excluded from the unit, but if they apply for SNAP they must be in the same unit as their foster parent(s);
· children under the age of 18 who are under the parental control of a unit member must be in the unit with that member; and
· spouses who live together must always be in the same unit.
The following people must be excluded from a SNAP household (consequently, do not include them when determining the number of people you customarily purchase and meals with/for). If you or someone else meets one of these descriptions, then you or that person cannot be included in the SNAP household:
· anyone who has been convicted of making a fraudulent statement or misrepresentation with respect to residence in order to receive TANF, SNAP, SSI, or Medicaid simultaneously in two or more states;
· post-secondary students unless they meet certain conditions;
· anyone who has been convicted of trafficking SNAP benefits of $500 or more;
· for those individuals who are currently receiving SNAP, anyone who is currently disqualified for an Intentional Program Violation; and
· individuals who are both residents of California and receiving SSI.
Your household may be disqualified if a member of your household is currently on strike. However, under certain conditions, the household is eligible for SNAP. See the topic "Strikers - SNAP (Food Stamps) " for more information.
See the topic Household Size - SNAP (Food Stamps) for additional information.
