SNAP (Food Stamp) Benefit Levels

Images of Food Stamps paper couponsThe monthly amount of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly Food Stamp Program) benefits the household gets is called an allotment. The net monthly income of the household is multiplied by .3, and the result is subtracted from the maximum allotment for the household size to find the actual monthly allotment amount. This is because SNAP households are expected to spend about 30 percent of their resources on food. The maximum allotment amounts change at each Federal fiscal year, which run from October 1st to September 30th.

SNAP allotments are delivered by Electronic Benefit Transfer systems everywhere now, rather than by the older paper Food Stamps booklets. Food Stamp coupons (shown in the graphic above) are no longer being produced or issued by states and inventories are being destroyed. However, coupons that had already been issued continued to be honored until June 17, 2009.

The current maximum monthly allotment levels for Federal Fiscal Year 2012, in effect from October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2012, are shown in the tables below.
