Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly Food Stamp Program) households have to meet income tests unless all members are receiving TANF, SSI, or, in some States, have at least one household member participating in one or more specific programs that confer categorical eligiblity on the household. Most households must meet both the gross and net income tests, but a household with an elderly person or a person who is receiving certain types of disability payments only has to meet the net income test. Households, except those noted, that have income over the amounts listed below cannot get food stamps.
Income eligibility standards are expressed as a percentage of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL).
The following charts list the current net and gross income eligibility standards for Federal Fiscal Year 2012, effective October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2012.

Gross income means a household's total, non-excluded income, before any deductions have been made. Net income means gross income minus allowable deductions.
Deductions are allowed as follows:
· A 20 percent deduction from earned income;
· A standard deduction for all households equal to 8.31 percent of the applicable net income limit based on household size. No household can receive an amount more than the standard deduction for a household of six, or less than the minimum standard deduction amount, based on location, as shown in the table below:

· A dependent care deduction when needed for work, or training and/or or education needed to gain or maintain employment -- before 10/01/2008 not more than $200 for each child under age 2 and not more than $175 for each other dependent;
· Medical expenses for elderly or disabled members which are more than $35 for the month if they are not paid by insurance or someone else;
· Legally owed child support payments; and
· Excess shelter costs that are more than half of the household's income after the other deductions. Allowable costs include the cost of fuel to heat and cook with, electricity, water, the basic fee for one telephone, rent or mortgage payments and taxes on the home. (Some States allow a set amount for utility costs instead of actual costs.) The amount of the shelter deduction cannot be more than the limits shown in the tables below unless at least one person in the household is elderly or disabled (in which case the dollar limit does not apply):
