The Community Work Experience Program (CWEP) is a VIEW work activity for VIEW participants who are unable to obtain unsubsidized employment or another work activity such as On-the-Job or other subsidized training or an FEP placement.
If you participate in CWEP, you are placed in a six-month community work experience position. You work for your benefits in a public or private non-profit agency in order to improve your skills and serve a public function.
The purpose of CWEP is to help prepare you to obtain unsubsidized employment. If you are assigned to CWEP for more than three months, you should be searching for a job at the same time.
The number of hours you must work each week is calculated in the following manner:
· Combine your total TANF dollar amount with your food stamp allotment amount and divide by the federal minimum wage. The result equals the required monthly hours to participate in CWEP. Divide the result by 4.3 to determine the required hours per week for CWEP participation.
· Include in the calculation only the benefits belonging to your TANF household. Food Stamps received by individuals in the household who are not included in the TANF grant should not be counted in the calculation.
· For TANF-UP cases, the entire benefit amount, combined total dollar amount of TANF and food stamp benefits, available in a CWEP calculation will be used for each participant. If both mandatory TANF-UP participants are placed in CWEP, they both will be required to participate the required number of calculated hours. For example, if the calculation requires 25 hours of participation, each individual will be in CWEP for 25 hours a week, for a total household participation of 50 hours per week.
· No participant will be required to work more than 32 hours a week.
· After the initial six months of participation in CWEP, the number of hours a participant works can be reduced to allow increased participation in education/or skills training to further the participant's employability, or the participant can be assigned to another CWEP site, if appropriate.
Your initial assignment to CWEP must be for a period of six months. Any subsequent assignments must be for a minimum of three months.
There is no limitation on the number of assignments to the community work experience component.
