The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families - Unemployed Parent (TANF-UP) program is intended to provide assistance to families with two able-bodied parents.
Members of the VA TANF-UP Assistance Unit must meet the VA TANF Eligibility criteria, and neither of the parents can be incapacitated as defined in VA VIEW Exemption Criteria.
NOTE: Getting Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is an incapacitated exemption.
Both parents must participate in VIEW unless one of the parents is exempt (for reasons other than incapacitation).
NOTE: If one of the parents is exempt because of incapacitation, or if both parents are exempt from VIEW participation for any reason, then the case is a regular TANF case, not TANF-UP.
To reward work, VIEW participants in a TANF-UP household may earn up to 150% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) for the assistance unit's size (or up to 100% FPL in the case of regular TANF households) and remain eligible for TANF for up to twenty-four months from the date that the initial VIEW Agreement of Personal Responsibility is signed.
Since families that receive TANF-UP benefits must participate in VIEW, the VIEW calculations are always used rather than the TANF calculations. The VIEW calculations for TANF-UP cases almost always result in a higher grant amount than either TANF VIEW cases or non-VIEW TANF cases.
For details see VA TANF - Grant Amount Calculations and VA VIEW - Grant Amount Calculations.
Since families that receive TANF-UP benefits must participate in VIEW, the VIEW 24-month time limit always applies rather than the TANF 60-month time limit.
See VA VIEW Time Limit for more information about the time limit that applies to TANF-UP participation.
