Net Income - Section 8

"Section 8 Net Income" is a WorkWORLD term. It is not a term used by HUD or your Public Housing Agency (PHA). WorkWORLD allows you to make meaningful comparisons of your family's income and expenses across different situations by showing you – in the Numerical Results section – your gross income, certain selected expenses, and the results of subtracting those expenses from your gross income. WorkWORLD calls those results your "Section 8 Net Income."

Gross Income

Your family's gross monthly income is a sum of all of the Earned Income, Unearned Income, and Income from Assets that you entered into WorkWORLD. No Income Exclusions or Deductions are subtracted in calculating your Gross Income.

Selected Expenses

The selected monthly expenses are those that WorkWORLD must ask you about in order to calculate your eligibility and rent payments, as well as the rent and utilities payments themselves. The expenses shown in the Numerical Results are:

·      Rent and Utilities: This is the sum of the rent you pay and your estimate of the monthly cost of utilities that are not included in the rent. If you are entitled to a Utility Reimbursement, WorkWORLD subtracts this amount from your monthly utility expense in calculating your Rent and Utilities Expenses.

·      Child Care Costs: This is the actual cost of child care, regardless of whether it can be counted as a deduction in calculating your rent.

·      Attendant Care Expenses: This is the actual cost of attendant care and auxiliary apparatus expenses regardless of whether it can be counted as a deduction in calculating your rent.

·      Other Work Expenses: This is the actual cost of other work expenses that can not be counted as a deduction.

NOTE: You may be able to include your work expenses in a Plan for Achieving Self-Support (PASS). If you do, then the expenses are excluded when calculating your financial eligibility for Section 8 assistance and your payments for Section 8 rent and utilities.

·      Unreimbursed Medical Expenses: This is the actual sum of your family's unreimbursed medical expenses regardless of whether the expenses can be counted as a deduction in calculating your rent.

Employability Investments

The amount of monthly income that your family spends or saves for training, education, equipment or anything that you think will help you become more employable.

NOTE: You may be able to include your employability investments in a Plan for Achieving Self-Support (PASS). If you do, then the expenses are excluded when calculating your financial eligibility for Section 8 assistance and your payments for Section 8 rent and utilities.

Section 8 Net Income

The Section 8 Net Income shown in the Numerical Results is simply the amount of your family's gross income that remains after subtracting the selected expenses and employability investments above.

WorkWORLD allows you to compare the amount of this net income across various "What-If?" situations so that you can see the net effect of going to work and using various work incentives, especially the PASS work incentive.
