Unreimbursed reasonable attendant care and auxiliary apparatus expenses for each member of the family who is a person with disabilities may be deducted from your gross non-excluded income in calculating the amount of rent and utilities that you have to pay.
The deduction is limited to the expenses that are necessary to enable any member of your family (including the member who is a person with disabilities) to be employed, and the deduction may not exceed the earned income received by family members who are 18 years of age or older who are able to work because of such attendant care or auxiliary apparatus.
The deduction is also limited to the amount that is over 3% of your gross non-excluded income.
NOTE: You should enter the full amount of such expenses into WorkWORLD because the software automatically limits the deduction to the appropriate amount.
NOTE: Contact your Public Housing Agency (PHA) if you are not sure how to annualize your expenses.
Your PHA determines if your unreimbursed attendant care and auxiliary apparatus expenses are "reasonable" given the normal cost of such services and apparatus in your area. The PHA deducts your reasonable, unreimbursed attendant care and auxiliary apparatus expenses in determining your Adjusted Monthly Income and the amount you must pay in rent.
