Medical Expenses - Section 8 Deduction

A portion of the unreimbursed medical expenses of all members of elderly and disabled families may be deducted from your gross non-excluded income in calculating the amount of rent and utilities that you have to pay.

Elderly and Disabled Family: Families are considered elderly if the head of household, spouse, or sole member is 62 years of age or older. Families are considered disabled if the head of household, spouse, or sole member is a person with disabilities.

The deduction is limited to the amount that is over 3% of your family's gross non-excluded income.

NOTE: You should enter the full amount of such expenses into WorkWORLD because the software automatically limits the deduction to the appropriate amount.

Medicare Prescription Drug Program

If you participate in the Medicare Prescription Drug Program, you should use the cost of the drugs without program benefits as the amount of your expenses, not your actual out-of-pocket expenses. (See Section 8 Rent and the Medicare Prescription Drug Program for details.)

NOTE: Contact your Public Housing Agency (PHA) if you are not sure how to annualize your expenses.
