Welcome and Introduction to Iowa Benefit Information System (IABIS)

Image of the Iowa State Flag. The Iowa flag resembles the flag of France, having three vertical blue, white and red stripes, because Iowa was originally part of the territory known as the Louisiana purchase. As well as a reference to the colors of the United States, the color blue stands for loyalty, justice and truth; the white stands for purity; and the red for courage. On the white center stripe is a bald eagle, signifying American liberty and carrying a blue streamer in its beak. The state motto 'Our Liberties We Prize, and Our Rights We will Maintain' is written on the streamer. The name of the state is emblazoned in red letters below the eagle. The flag was adopted in 1921.

Welcome to a world of information about Iowa disability and welfare benefits and about Iowa's implementation of federal disability and welfare benefits. We hope that you will be able to use the Iowa Benefit Information System (IABIS) to find out what you need to know about Iowa's implementation of housing, food stamps, health, welfare and other benefits. IABIS is integrated into WorkWORLD so that you can better use the information to help you go to work and become more financially self-sufficient.

DISCLAIMER: The Department of Human Services (DHS) information contained in the Iowa Benefit Information System is a description of the basic policies relative to eligibility and is intended to provide general guidance only, not to answer specific, individual questions. This site cannot legally be cited as an official or authoritative source. As these policies are subject to change and are not comprehensive, DHS cannot assure the accuracy of any specific provision originating from this site. Please check with a local DHS office worker for specific answers for an individual case. People wishing to apply for assistance from any DHS program need to contact the local DHS office in their county of residence. People currently receiving assistance from any DHS program who would like information on their own case should contact their DHS case worker.

WorkWORLD incorporates IABIS as a distinct module within the larger WorkWORLD Help/Information System. We provide hyperlinks within the Iowa module that allow you to click on underlined terms to find out more information about those terms. (You can use the back button on the toolbar to go back to the original screen.)

If you are using this Help/Information System on the Internet, click the "Show Navigation" link at the upper left corner of this screen to reveal the Contents, Index, and Search features. Also see Using the Help/Information System On The Web for additional features and operational information.

NOTE: The hyperlinks to the Iowa Dept of Human Services Employees' Policy Manual will only work if you are connected to the Internet and have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed. The link will open in your browser and you can see in much more detail the specific policies you are interested in. (If you don't have the Acrobat Reader, you can download it free from www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html.)

Navigating among Iowa Questions and Results

If you just want to find out how to answer Iowa Questions and see Iowa Results, read the two sections below. In the current version of WorkWORLD, Iowa questions and results are incorporated as follows:

·      Iowa Questions

If you answer YES to the "Iowa – Other Benefits" question (asked right after the SSI, SSDI, Medicaid and Medicare questions):

Questions about Iowa benefits that may be relevant to you in your situation are asked after all other SSI/DI questions are asked if you do not have WorkWORLD calculate results for Housing and/or Food Stamps benefits.

If WorkWORLD does ask Housing and/or Food Stamps questions, then the Iowa questions are asked after you have answered those questions.

To find the Iowa questions after you have completed one or more situations, you can simply scroll down to the last questions in the list.

Select View, Inputs. (Hold down "Alt" and press "V" and then "I".)

With your mouse, click on or drag the scroll bar located on the right side of your screen, or

With the keyboard: Press the "Home" key to move your cursor to the questions column and then hold down the "Alt" key and use your Down-arrow to scroll down to the question of interest and your Right-arrow to move to the answer box in the situation of interest.

·      Iowa Results

The Text Results for Iowa benefits are located at the end of the Text Results for SSI and SSDI programs (in the SSI/DI Text Results section).

Select View, Outputs. (Hold down "Alt" and press "V" and then "O".)

Select View, SSI/DI. (Hold down "Alt" and press "V" and then "S".)

Select Text Results. (Hold down "Alt" and press "T".)

With your mouse, click on or drag the scroll bar located on the right of the Text Results for the situation of interest, or
