Family Investment Program - Overview - Iowa

The Family Investment Program (FIP) is Iowa’s cash assistance program under the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.

The Family Investment Program provides financial assistance to needy families with children as they become self-supporting. The Family Investment Program offers training or education, provides incentives to work by allowing families to keep and save more of the money they earn, and provides them with the opportunity to make choices and take personal responsibility to change their life circumstances.

In particular, working individuals may receive matching funds for money they set aside for education, for purchase of a home, or to start a new business. See Individual Development Account for more information.

FIP assistance is available to eligible families without regard to race, color, religion, creed, national origin, sex, age, political belief, and mental or physical disability.

Financial assistance with transportation and child care expenses is available to FIP Recipients who need assistance with transportation and/or child care while they participate in any PROMISE JOBS component escept employment. For assistance with child care while employed, see: Child Care Assistance regarding the Child Care Assistance program.

Application for Family Investment Program assistance is made in the Department’s office in the family’s county of residence. If a consumer has a child under age 18, this program may be a resource.
