Family-Life Home Program Overview - Iowa

A family-life home is a private household offering a protective social living arrangement for one or two adult clients who are unable or unwilling to adequately maintain themselves in an independent living arrangement, but are physically capable of caring for themselves.

In such a living arrangement, the family provides the client’s room, board, and laundry services. The family also encourages the client to share in the interests and activities of the household and to participate in the social, cultural, educational, religious, and other activities of the community.

Under the family-life home program, an eligible person’s income is supplemented with a payment to the family and a personal needs allowance. (The total of the two is called the "payment standard.")

For the amounts of the family payment, personal needs allowance and payment standard, Click on Desk Aid Supp. The Desk Aid for Supplemental Assistance contains the basic payment standards (payment amounts) for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and the various State Supplementary Assistance programs.

NOTE: If you are connected to the Internet you can click on Desk Aid for Supplemental Assistance to see the on-line Desk Aid.

NOTE: You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed in order to view the on-line version. If you do not have the Reader installed, you can download it free from: www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html.

Once the person’s income is brought up to the payment standard, the person then pays the family-life home the amount of the family payment, and retains the personal needs allowance amount for personal needs expenses.
