Persons who are in need of housing assistance in Iowa have available the following options:
· Section 8 Tenant Based Assistance: For families with very low incomes. This program allows families to find an approved apartment of their choice in the community and pay rent of 30% of their adjusted income. Assistance is tied to the family.
· Section 8 Project Based Assistance: For families with low incomes. This program allows families to rent apartments in approved project buildings and pay rent of 30% of their adjusted income. Assistance is tied to the building.
NOTE: WorkWORLD will calculate eligibility and payment amounts for Section 8 Tenant-Based and Project-Based rental assistance. Go to the Section 8 area of WorkWORLD once you have located a specific rental unit.
· HCBS Rent Subsidy and Household Assistance: For eligible adults participating in one of the Iowa Department of Human Services Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Medicaid Waiver programs. The HCBS rent subsidy provides monthly rental assistance (and one-time household start-up expenses up to $500) to eligible adults participating in one of the HCBS Medicaid Waiver programs after they first contribute 30% of their own income toward rental costs.
· Supportive Housing for Persons with Disabilities – Section 811: For very low income families in which at least one member of the family has a long term disability and is between 18 and 62 years old. This program allows resident rent and apartment in an approved building and to pay rent of 30% of adjusted income. Assistance is tied to the rental unit.
· Section 8 Mainstream Housing Opportunities: For individuals who have a long term disability, who have a very low income, and who are between 18 and 62 years old. This program provides both affordable housing (rent at 30% of adjusted income) and supportive services for people with disabilities. Individual finds apartment in the community. Assistance is tied to the individual or family.
· Public Housing: Usually for families with very low incomes. This program allows families to rent a public housing unit and pay rent of 30% of their adjusted income. Assistance is tied to the public housing project.
· Supportive Housing for the Elderly – Section 202: For persons over 62 years old who have very low incomes. This program allows resident rent and apartment in an approved building and to pay rent of 30% of adjusted income. Assistance is tied to the rental unit.
· Property Tax Suspension : Persons who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), State Supplementary Assistance (SSA), or who live in a health care facility may have their property taxes suspended until the property is transferred to someone else.
· Property Tax Relief: Persons who are 65 years old or disabled may receive up to $1,000 in property tax credits for their homestead if the gross household income is less than $16,655 (Year 2000)
· Rent Reimbursement: Persons who are 65 years old or disabled may receive up to $1,000 in rent reimbursement if the gross household income is less than $16,655 (Year 2000)
