The intent of the Iowa dependent person program is to supplement the income of persons who have a special financial need because they have an eligible dependent living with them, such as a spouse, child or parent. Dependent person payments are made to aged, blind, or disabled persons whose income is too low to meet the needs of a dependent relative living with them. The applicant and the dependent relative may be eligible for Medicaid, including retroactive Medicaid.
An applicant who is not already receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) must also file an application with the Social Security Administration district office even if the applicant’s income is above SSI standards.
If possible, the applicant should go to the Social Security Administration during the month of application for dependent person allowance; otherwise payment will be delayed due to our accounting system links. The State Supplementary Assistance payment starts no earlier than the month in which the applicant files for SSI and is prorated based on the filing date.
