Dependent Person Allowance - Eligibility- Iowa

A dependent relative of an aged, blind or disabled person (the "recipient") may be the person’s:

·        Ineligible spouse (a spouse who is not eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI))

·        Parent

·        Child (whether a minor or an adult)

To be eligible under the dependent person program, the dependent relative must be:

·        Financially dependent on the recipient

·        Living with the recipient. The dependent relative is no longer eligible if the dependent relative is out of the recipient’s home for a full calendar month. The dependent is removed prospectively when the absence is expected to last at least one full calendar month. (NOTE: If the dependent is expected to be out of the home for at least one full calendar month or more, the recipient should notify the program ahead of time so that over payment does not occur.)

The following persons are not considered financially dependent on the recipient:

·        A person whose countable income is more than the Dependent Person Allowance Income Limits per month

·        A person who is eligible to receive FIP

·        A person who is eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

·        A person living with a spouse who is not the recipient

A recipient can receive a dependent person allowance for only one dependent. If there is more than one dependent, the recipient must decide which of the dependents to include.

When a husband and wife are both eligible for and receiving SSI, the couple is only eligible to receive State Supplementary Assistance for only one dependent, not for two of them.
