In 1988, the General Assembly allocated funds to the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services (DRS) for the purpose of providing long-term follow-along to consumers with physical disabilities placed through Supported Employment time-limited services and who do not have access to alternate long term funding sources such as might be available to individuals with mental and emotional disabilities through the local Community Services Boards (CSBs). (These long-term follow-along services are also called Extended Services by DRS.)
NOTE: For general information about supported employment see the "Virginia Guide to Supported Employment and Job Coach Training Services" available in PDF format (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader) at: http://www.vadrs.org/essp/downloads/seguide.pdf.
Six SEPD Counselors are strategically located throughout the state and have access to SEPD funds for the purpose of purchasing long term follow-along services, as needed, through Supported Employment (SE) vendors across the state.
To the extent the SEPD Counselors' schedules and caseloads allow, they may provide the service directly, i.e. providing job coaching to consumers on the job site, following up with employers, families, etc. and intervening to whatever extent needed to insure job retention for that consumer, thus conserving their follow-along dollars. Or they may provide the service indirectly, by purchasing (authorizing) long-term follow-along services from SE vendors in the area and monitoring those services through monthly reporting and billing procedures.
