SD Black Hills Special Services Cooperative (BHSSC)

 

South Dakota Black Hills Special Services Cooperative logoBlack Hills Special Services Cooperative (BHSSC) provides public education, community development coordination, and technology applications that reduce geographic isolation. Central offices are located in Sturgis, with satellite offices throughout the Black Hills and in Pierre. The organization operates as an education cooperative under South Dakota Law, and has programs in many diverse fields.

 

Services Include:

BPAO Program: The Benefits, Planning, Assistance and Outreach (BPAO) Program provides free services to persons receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits based on disability or blindness.

Careers Academies: Careers Academies are located in Spearfish and Sturgis, and focus on helping high school students who are not succeeding in regular school settings achieve graduation and discover career paths.

Career Learning Center: The Career Learning Center of the Black Hills is located in Rapid City to help adults enter the workforce or to advance to better jobs. The center is free to anyone meeting Workforce Investment Act (WIA) income eligibility guidelines.

DakotaLink: DakotaLink serves South Dakotans who want to locate assistive devices, acquire them, and use them effectively.

Freedom to Work (FTW) Project: The FTW Project is funded by a Medicaid Infrastructure Grant (MIG) in South Dakota to support competitive employment of people with disabilities.

Programs for People with Developmental Disabilities: DD Programs include educational, employment, and residential plans designed to meet the individual needs of people with mild to severe disabilities. All ages are served; a range of programs is located throughout the Black Hills. Services include job matching and placement, foster home placement for children group homes, and a network of supervised apartments for adults. (See also: Division of Developmental Disabilities (DD)

Parent Resource Network: The Parent Resource Network provides a single point of access for all South Dakota parents seeking information and resources that will help them become active partners in their children's development. For more information, see:

Technology and Innovations in Education: Education, business, and government institutions turn to TIE for help addressing changing times and technology integration. Many South Dakotans credit TIE for providing them with technical skills needed to function professionally in the information age. Now TIE has moved into research and development in school improvement, committed to the best thinking and practices in curriculum development, assessment, instructional practices, leadership and evaluation. TIE publishes an online newsletter and coordinates with South Dakota's biggest educators' training event - the TIE Conference - each spring. For more information, see:

Timberline Treatment Center: This program offers adolescents with substance additions four levels of treatment, depending on individual need. Inpatient treatment for males, ages 13-17, happens in Spearfish. Outpatient services are provided for males and females in Rapid City and Spearfish. Outpatient levels include Intensive Outpatient Treatment, Day Treatment, and Continued Care. Most referrals come from the court system, but there are private placements as well, self-paid or covered by insurance. No one is denied services because of inability to pay. Transition Services Liaison Project: BHSSC contracts with the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DRS) and the Division of Service to the Blind and Visually Impaired (SBVI) to provide project management services to help students with disabilities transition from school to adult life. West River Business Service Center: The West River Business Service Center is the region's most comprehensive one-stop resource for free business assistance, including information about Small Business Administration 504 Loans, West River Revolving Loans, and Lawrence County Revolving Loans. Entrepreneurs can tap the expertise of the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), the Small Business Administration's Business Information Center, and the Small Business Development Center.
