The South Dakota Division of Service to the Blind and Visually Impaired (SBVI) focuses on employment and independent living outcomes. The mission of the Division of Service to the Blind and Visually Impaired is to provide individualized rehabilitation services that result in optimal employment and independent living outcomes for citizens who are blind or visually impaired.
· Significantly increasing employment placements for individuals who are blind, with emphasis on using rehabilitation technology on the job;
· Expanded delivery of specialized skills and services to citizens who are blind to improve independent functioning in their communities; and
· Improving statewide school to work transition programs.
Vocational Rehabilitation Services
South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (SDSBVI)
Some services are based upon your economic need and the availability of other sources of funding, such as health insurance, Federal grants, or benefits. Except as otherwise provided by law or as specified in the state plan agreement with the Federal government, the following rehabilitation services are provided based upon economic need:
· Physical restoration;
· Transportation other than that provided to determine the eligibility of the individual for vocational rehabilitation services and the nature and extent of the services necessary;
· Occupational licenses;
· Customary occupational tools and equipment, excluding computer-related assistive technology devices needed to overcome visual disability as an impediment to employment for competitive employment purposes;
· Maintenance;
· Training books and materials; and
· Tuition and fees for participating in postsecondary academic training programs under the Federal Student Financial Assistance Program
