The South Dakota Division of Service to the Blind and Visually Impaired (SBVI) provides individualized services to any person whose visual disability significantly interferes with getting or keeping a job and who needs Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) services to overcome barriers to employment.
SBVI can pay for training and employment preparation costs that lead to meaningful employment in a broad range of careers for blind citizens.
During the application process, a rehabilitation counselor assesses your disability, employment history, and your unique interests, strengths, and abilities. When the assessment is complete, you and the counselor devise an Individual Plan for Employment (IPE) that includes your responsibilities and all the services to be made available to you.
· Vocational Counseling;
· Work Skills (may be provided on-the-job, through Supported Employment, at a vocational technical school, or at a college or university);
· Skills of Blindness Training (includes independent travel, communications, computers, and home making;
· Job Site Accommodations (may involve purchasing special equipment or redesigning a work area for an employer);
· Medical Services (medical services such as artificial limbs, hearing aids, wheelchairs, or corrective surgery);
· Job Placement; and
· Employer Services (free technical assistance about how best to accommodate individual workers who are blind/visually impaired).
