The focus of this program is to provide a broad scope of services to individuals who are visually impaired or blind in their home communities and to teach the essential skills of blindness necessary to continue to live and work as independently, safely, and comfortably as possible.
Professional rehabilitation teachers work with individuals in their homes to teach alternative techniques of doing everyday activities.
To be eligible, individuals must:
· Have a significant visual impairment;
· Have a substantial limitation in ability to function independently;
· Have a reasonable expectation that Independent Living services will assist the individual; and
· Reside in South Dakota.
· Counseling;
· Training in cane travel skills and other travel skills;
· Training in communication skills such as writing letters and reading Braille;
· Training in telling time;
· Training in homemaking skills;
· Strategies and technologies for utilizing low vision;
· Leisure activities; and
· Training to public and private organizations.
