Transition services are available to assist high school students who are blind or visually impaired to prepare to enter the world of work. Counselors from the Division of Service to the Blind and Visually Impaired (SBVI) and a transition specialist will meet with the students, their parents and the IEP teams to assist with planning for entry into the world of work.
The transition specialists are employed through a cooperative agreement - the Transition Services Liaison Project - between the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (SDSBVI) and SBVI
In addition, the Transition Services Liaison Project is available to consult with students, families, counselors and teachers.
Students who are age 14 and older, and are blind or visually impaired, may be eligible for transition services. Services are delivered through cooperation between SBVI, SDSBVI and the school district. An Individual Plan for Employment is developed to assist with vocational rehabilitation services.
Rehabilitation counselors or the statewide transition specialist will assist with obtaining part time employment during the school year, summer employment or vocational exploration. Technical assistance and skills training are available to assist students and educators with services related to the specialized skills of blindness.
Project Skills: Project Skills offers paid work experience for high school students with disabilities who are age 16 or over.
