SD DSS - Office of Medical Eligibility - Overview

The South Dakota Office of Medical Eligibility covers medical care provided to low-income people who meet eligibility standards for one of the Medicaid programs listed below. These programs are financed jointly by state and federal government and are managed by the SD Department of Social Services (DSS).

If you are eligible, a Medical Assistance program will act as your insurance company and pay for medical services such as visits to the doctor, hospital, dentist, chiropractor, etc.

Medical Assistance Programs

Whether or not you qualify for a particular type of Medical Assistance will depend on your income and circumstances. To learn more about the types of Medical Assistance Programs that are available, click on one of the following categories:

·      Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

·      Disabled Children's Program (for children staying at home who would otherwise need skilled nursing services in a medical facility)

·      Family Support Services for children with Developmental Disabilities (DD)

·      Home and Community Based Waiver Services (HCBWS) (for individuals with DD or Quadriplegia, or who are Elderly)

·      Long-Term Care Medical Assistance

·      Low Income Families (LIF) Medical Assistance

·      Medicaid for Medicare Recipients with Low Incomes and Limited Resources (also called "Medicare-Related Medicaid')

·      Pregnant Women Medical Assistance

·      QMB, SLMB, QI-1 & QWI

·      Supplemental Security Income (SSI) & Related Programs

·      Transitional Medical Assistance (for LIF recipients who lose assistance because of employment or child support)
