The Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provides free health insurance to South Dakota children who meet financial eligibility guidelines. It is South Dakota's implementation of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), Title XXI of the Social Security Act (PL 105-33, August 5, 1997).
CHIP covers doctor appointments, hospital stays, dental and vision services, prescription drugs, mental health care, and other medical services. Children eligible for CHIP are also entitled to Healthy Kids Klub checkups.
NOTE: For a list of those medical services that are covered, go to: http://www.state.sd.us/social/Medical/Recipient/Handbook/CoveredServices.htm.
If a child with private health insurance is determined eligible, CHIP will pay the deductibles, co-payments, and medical services that may not be covered by the policy. The start of medical coverage is based on the date the application is received in the South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS) office that serves your county. The program may also cover medical services a child received three months prior to applying for CHIP.
