SD Dept of Social Services - Overview

 

South Dakota Department of Social Services logoSouth Dakota's Department of Social Services (DSS) provides a wide variety of services to individuals or families. When financial difficulties, physical or mental handicaps, or other problems threaten the independence of South Dakotans, the Department of Social Services is there to help. Individuals or families experiencing difficulties may be eligible for help from one of the department's programs.

 

Services include, among others:

·      Adult Services and Aging: Programs and services to help elderly people and adults with disabilities continue living in their own homes.

·      Child Care Assistance: Helps low-income families pay for child care so they can work or go to school and provides services to improve the quality of child care.

·      Community Assistance Services: Helps low-income families pay their heating bills and weatherize their homes. Other services vary at four Community Action Agencies located around the state.

·      Food Stamps: Helps low-income people buy the food they need to remain healthy.

·      Medical Assistance: DSS determines if people are eligible for Medical Assistance (Medicaid or CHIP) and Medical Services.

·      Rx Access (Medication Assistance): Helps people gain access to drug company assistance programs that supply prescription medications at low or no cost.

·      Sales Tax on Food Refund Program: Provides refunds of sales tax payments on food to low-income residents.

·      Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF): Provides temporary monthly cash assistance to needy families.
