SD Transitional Medical Benefits

The South Dakota Department of Social Services may provide up to 12 months of additional transitional medical benefits to former low-income medical recipients. South Dakota families who are no longer eligible for Medical Assistance for Low-Income Families (LIF) because of employment or child support received by a member of the household may receive additional Medical Assistance.

Eligibility Requirements

The family must have received Medical Assistance for Low-Income Families (LIF) for at least three of the previous six months before going off LIF.

The family's monthly gross earned income must be at or below 185% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines (FPL).

Children who are 18 years old are not eligible for Transitional Medical Benefits unless they are full-time students in high school and will graduate before they turn 19.

18-year-olds may not be eligible for other Medical Assistance.
