Work Related Expenses

SSI Recipients:

If you are an SSI recipient who has work related expenses, then you may be able to receive at least partial recovery of those expenses by including them in a Plan for Achieving Self Support (PASS).

Alternatively, if the work expenses are also disability related, then you may be able to receive at least partial compensation for those expenses by counting them as an Impairment Related Work Expense (IRWE).

NOTE: In most cases a PASS will result in a higher benefit amount than an IRWE. (Use WorkWORLD to compare similar situations using a PASS and IRWE.) Using a PASS is possible, however, only if you can design what SSA agrees is a viable plan to achieve a feasible occupational goal.

If you are an SSI recipient who is blind, then you may be able to receive at least partial compensation for both your disability related expenses and other work expenses by counting them as a Blind Work Expense (BWE) rather than as an IRWE. (A BWE usually results in greater benefits than an IRWE.)

NOTE: In some cases a PASS will result in a higher benefit amount than a BWE. (Use WorkWORLD to compare similar situations using a PASS and BWE.) Using a PASS is possible, however, only if you can design what SSA agrees is a viable plan to achieve a feasible occupational goal.

SSDI (Title II) Beneficiaries:

If you are an SSDI (Title II) beneficiary who has work related expense that are also disability related, then you may reduce your countable income by counting them as an IRWE for SSDI (Title II) purposes. Doing so may help you keep your cash benefits if your countable earnings are over the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) and you have completed your Trial Work Period (TWP) and Grace Period.

Note that you may count your disability related work expenses as an IRWE for SSDI (Title II) purposes even if you are including those expenses in a PASS for SSI purposes.
