Impairment Related Work Expense - SSDI (Title II)

If you are a Social Security Disability Insurance beneficiary who is working and has work expenses that are related to your disability, you can claim those work expenses as an Impairment Related Work Expense (IRWE). The expense must, as its name implies, be related to your impairment. It can not be an expense that any similar worker without a disability would also have (such as purchase of a uniform, or bus fares if the bus is not specifically used for transporting you because of your disability).

If your SSA Claims Representative agrees that your work expenses are disability related, then the entire amount of your IRWE will be excluded from your earnings in determining whether or not your earnings exceed the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) amount.

This work incentive is available to individuals who are blind as well as those with other disabilities. (The Blind Work Expense (BWE) work incentive applies only to the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, not to SSDI.)

NOTE: In the 2001 version of its "Red Book," the Social Security Administration (SSA) began using the term "Employment Supports" in place of "Work Incentives." See the SSA Red Book topic for additional information. The latest version of SSA's Red Book on Employment Support is available at:
