VA TANF - Standard of Assistance

The TANF Standard of Assistance is based on the Standard of Need, but is slightly lower than the Standard of Need everywhere but in Loudon County, where the County makes up the difference. The Department of Social Services (DSS) sets the Standard of Need as the amount needed monthly to provide for the basic needs of a family for its size and locality. (The below three tables show the Standards of Assistance for each of the three locality groupings.)

In order to be financially eligible for TANF, your TANF Assistance Unit (AU) must have gross countable income that does not exceed the Standard of Assistance.

The Standard of Assistance is also used in determining your TANF Grant Amount

NOTE: DSS has set a maximum payment below that which families of 6 or larger would get if the Standard of Assistance were used. See the bottom/right of each table for the maximum payment amount.)
