Through the Workforce Investment Act, the South Dakota Department of Labor (DOL) offers:
On-the-Job Training (OJT): OJT is a program providing occupational skill training with a local employer that leads to full-time employment with that employer. It allows you a chance to learn while you earn.
Work Experience: Work Experience is a planned learning experience that helps you to learn about the working world. It helps to develop the skills and knowledge needed to obtain employment.
Occupational Skill Training: Occupational skill training is formal training from an educational institution that develops the necessary skills for you to obtain employment.
Customized Skill Training: Customized skill training is a structured training program organized by one or more employers to develop needed skills for specific occupations. These programs may be a combination of classroom training and On-the-Job Training experiences.
Job Corps: The Job Corps is the largest residential education and training program for disadvantaged youth. There are 112 centers in 46 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. It is a time-tested program, touching the lives of 100,000 young people every year.
Career Learning Center Programs: In addition to the above training programs, individuals may be able to take advantage of Career Learning Centers (CLCs). These are local non-profit organizations that can assist with work readiness, education programs, skill training, and employment counseling. CLCs work very closely with participants and the Career Centers in designing a job training program.
