Numerical Results

Picture of man using computer. To see the Numerical Results using your keyboard, first select the Output view by selecting View, Outputs (hold down the "Alt" key and press "V" and then "O"). Then select the Numerical Results by holding down the "Alt" key and pressing "N"

Or, using your mouse, click on the 100% Output icon located on your toolbar near the top of your screen, and then click on the "Numerical Results" tab located in the lower-left corner of the main screen.

Screenshot of the Maximize Output Panel button found on the WorkWORLD toolbar, represented by a black and gray magnifying glass with the legend 100% Ouput on the icon. then Screenshot of WorkWORLD output panel Numerical Results (SSI/DI) tab. or Screenshot of WorkWORLD output panel Numerical Results (Housing) tab. or Screenshot of WorkWORLD output panel Numerical Results (Food Stamps) tab.

Note that the Numerical Results tab could include either "(SSI/DI)", or "(Housing)" or "(Food Stamps)". Which tab you see depends on whether you are looking at SSI/DI results, or Housing results, or Food Stamps results. (Go to Understanding WorkWORLD Results for instruction on moving among the different program results.)

The Numerical Results for each of the three types of programs are displayed differently because each program calculates the benefit amounts and the effects of the benefit differently. We explain below the presentation of Numerical Results for each type of program.

The correct Numerical Results are displayed only after all appropriate questions have been answered to complete a situation. If you make changes to any of your answers in a situation, WorkWORLD will recalculate your outputs and again display them on the lower portion of your screen. Changing one answer may cause additional questions to be asked. WorkWORLD will show the changed outputs only after all questions have been answered to complete the change.

The viewing size of the Results screen can be made larger or smaller by placing your mouse just above the output portion of the screen until it turns into a double arrow. Drag the top of the Results screen up or down to adjust the viewing size.

SSI/DI Numerical Results

SSI/DI Numerical Results are calculated for an individual (or a couple if both receive SSI) on a monthly basis. The benefit amount is usually calculated based your income situation two months before the payment month. (SSA calls this Retrospective Monthly Accounting.) This means that if you enter a change in income or the use of a work incentive, you will see the result in your benefit amount two months later.

SSI/DI Numerical Results are grouped under four headings: 1) Income, 2) Expenses, 3) Income minus Expenses (note that this section's bottom line is Net Income – how much money you have available after you pay for all work expenses and set aside your employability investment amount) and 4) Work Incentives.

The "Income" section lists the amounts, if any, of your SSI and SSDI (Title II) benefits, other unearned income and earned income. The Total Gross Income is the sum of all listed income.

The "Expenses" section includes all work-related expenses, both disability-related and non-disability-related. They also include the employability investments you make that are designed to help you become more self-supporting.

The section labeled "Income minus Expenses" subtracts your Total Work Expenses and Employability Investments from your Total Gross Income to produce your Net income. This is the amount you have to pay for other living expenses such as rent, food, clothing, etc. See Net Income SSI/DI Numerical Results for more information.

The "Deemed Income" section appears if income is deemed from your parents or spouse. The type and amount of deeming is shown for each situation. Deemed Income is not included in Net Income, but is displayed separately so that the reason for benefit changes with changes in deemed income is apparent.

The "Work Incentives" section shows your use of the various work incentive provisions, such as PASS, IRWE, BWE, SEIE, Subsidies, and TWP and Grace Periods. Only the incentives applicable to your case are displayed. When they do not apply to a specific situation, one or more cells may appear "grayed-out", or display "N/A".

NOTE: SSI/DI Net income does not take into account federal, state, or local taxes. We encourage you to consult a tax advisor or use tax software to calculate the effect of taxes and the earned income tax credit on your net income.

Housing Numerical Results

Housing numerical results are calculated based on the expected annual income and expenses of the entire household. The local Public Housing Agency (PHA) decides exactly how to determine those annual amounts. The PHA may simply multiply the current month by 12, or it may average some longer period so as to reduce the necessity of making changes each month.

WorkWORLD's defaults are set to annualize the monthly income and expenses of the individual by multiplying by 12, but you may change that amount if you find that your PHA does it differently. Of course, if others in the household are expected to have income and/or expenses, those amounts must be added to the default amounts.

WorkWORLD presents the income, expenses and rent amounts as monthly amounts because most people think of their rent and utility expenses in such terms.

Housing Numerical Results are presented in five sections: 1) Income, 2) Selected Expenses, 3) Employability Investments, 4) Section 8 Net Income, and 5) Details of Section 8 Rent and Utilities Expenses.

The "Income" section includes unearned income, earned income and income from assets (which is treated differently than other unearned income in calculating the rental subsidy).

The "Selected Expenses" section includes your rent and utilities and all those expenses that are taken into account in calculating the rental subsidy. Note that the full expenses are presented, even though only a portion of some expenses may be used in the rental subsidy calculations. This allows you to make meaningful comparisons of expenses across different situations.

The "Employability Investments" section includes those amounts you spend or save in order to purchase services or equipment that promise to make you more employable.

The "Section 8 Net Income" section calculates the income you have left over after paying for the selected expenses and setting aside the employability investments. Although this "net income" amount is rather arbitrary in that it includes only selected expenses, it provides you with a consistent comparison across situations so that you can see the changes across different "What-If?" situations. See Net Income - Section 8 for more information.

And finally, the "Details of Section 8 Rent and Utilities Expenses" section separates the rent you pay from the amount you actually pay for utilities.

Food Stamps Numerical Results

Food Stamps numerical results are calculated based on the expected monthly income and expenses of the entire household.

WorkWORLD presents the income, expenses, deductions, and benefit amounts as monthly amounts because most people think of their income and expenses in such terms.

Food Stamps Numerical Results are presented in five sections: 1) Household Monthly Income, 2) Selected Monthly Expenses, 3) Details of Food Stamps Net Income, and 4) Food Stamps Benefits.

The "Household Monthly Income" section shows your household’s totals both unearned income and earned income, and provides a total of the two, or the Total Monthly Gross Income.

The "Selected Monthly Expenses" section includes all those expenses that are taken into account in calculating your eligibility for, and benefits from, the Food Stamp program. Note that the full expenses are presented, even though only a portion of some expenses may be used in the Food Stamp calculations. This allows you to make meaningful comparisons of expenses across different situations.

The "Details of Food Stamps Net Income" section calculates the net income you have left over after all your allowable deductions are subtracted from your gross income. Some of these deductions are fixed and available to all households, while some are based on a portion of the actual amount of your expenses shown in the section above. Still others are based on the amount of income your household earns through employment. Although this "net income" amount is rather arbitrary in that it includes only selected expenses, it provides you with a consistent comparison across situations so that you can see the changes across different "What-If?" situations. The resulting number in this section, Food Stamps Net Income, is a key factor in the determination of your Food Stamp benefits. See the topic Food Stamp Benefit Levels for more information about how net income is used to determine benefit levels.

And finally, the "Food Stamps Benefits" section shows your calculated monthly Food Stamps Allotment amount.
