People with disabilities who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and want to work, but worry that employment may cause cash benefits and health coverage to be lost, may contact the South Carolina Pathways Toward Employment (SCPTE) program for free services, information, and referral.
SC Pathways Toward Employment is one of the community organizations called Benefits Planning, Assistance, and Outreach (BPAO) projects. The Social Security Administration (SSA), as authorized by the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999, awarded a cooperative agreement to SCPTE to provide all SSA beneficiaries with disabilities (including transition-to-work aged youth) access to benefits planning and assistance services.
SSDI, SSI, Medicare and Medicaid programs now offer work incentives that can extend cash benefits and medical coverage if an individual attempts to work. Benefits Specialists can help individuals learn about work incentives, as well as other resources and supports that are available, to help them make an informed choice about working.
SCPTE Benefits Specialists help individuals establish a plan, access long-term supports, and solve problems related to benefits management and employment.
South Carolina Pathways Toward Employment is funded by the Social Security Administration and is administered by the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department in cooperation with the Center for Disability Resources, the S.C. Department of Mental Health, the S.C. Employment Security Commission, and the Disability Action Center.
