Vocational Rehabilitation Services - Overview - South Carolina

Logo of the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department (SCVRD)The South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department (SCVRD) serves people who want to work but are hindered from doing so by a physical or mental disability. Enabling eligible people with disabilities to prepare for, achieve and maintain competitive employment is SCVRD's mission.

SCVRD is the State VR Agency responsible for carrying out provisions of the Rehabilitation Act. It is also responsible for working with the Statewide Independent Living Council to develop a State Plan for Independent Living. The plan is required in order for the State to receive Federal financial assistance for independent living services and Centers for Independent Living (CIL).

When a person with a disability applies for SCVRD services, a team of vocational rehabilitation specialists helps determine eligibility. If SCVRD services could improve that person's prospects of competitive employment, eligibility can be established. Existing medical records are often used in determining eligibility.

A SCVRD team helps each new client understand the options available in setting and reaching a vocational goal. Each individual is a full partner in the vocational rehabilitation process, with access to all the information needed to make necessary decisions.

Once a decision about a vocational goal is made, an Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE) is designed with the help of a SCVRD counselor or someone else of the individual's choice. When agreement is reached on the services needed, the IPE becomes individual's guide for pursuing employment.
