The Department of Veterans' Services (DVS) operates a state financial assistance program based on need, which provides financial, medical, education, and housing aid, certain tax exemptions, and other benefits to veterans and their dependents. In addition, DVS represents all state agencies and individual veterans before the federal Department of Veterans Affairs in securing federal compensation and other benefits that might be available.
Local veterans' agents in the cities and towns administer the emergency financial and medical assistance programs and initiate applications for cash bonuses to Persian Gulf War veterans. Assistance and referral in the areas of federal compensation and pensions, state and federal educational benefits, tax exemptions, annuities, home loans, and Persian Gulf War Bonuses may also be obtained from these agents.
