Veterans' Services - Property Tax Exemptions - Massachusetts

Certain Massachusetts veterans are entitled to property tax exemptions. The property must be occupied as the veteran's or the surviving spouse’s domicile. If the property is greater than a single family house, the veteran or the surviving spouse is entitled to the proportionate part of the applicable exemption which relates to his/her occupancy of the domicile. The various exemptions are categorized below by the Massachusetts General Law (M.G.L.) that authorizes them. This information was current as of 05/22/2003.

M.G.L. ch. 59, s.5, clause 22 and clause 22D

An exemption of $250 or $2,000 of assessed taxable value of property is available to:

·      Veterans who, as a result of disabilities contracted while in wartime service and in the line of duty, have a disability rating of 10% or more as determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or by any branch of the armed forces

·      Veterans who served in the military or naval service of the United States in the Spanish War, in the Philippine Insurrection, or in the Chinese Relief Expedition

·      Veterans who have been awarded the Purple Heart

·      Spouses and surviving spouses (until s/he remarries) of veterans entitled to exemption under this clause

·      Mothers and fathers of veterans who lost their lives in wartime service

·      Surviving spouses of veterans who served in the armed forces of the United States between April 6, 1917 and November 11, 1918, or who were awarded the World War I Victory Medal and who have remained unmarried.

·      Surviving spouses of veterans who died during military action at the Islands of Quemoy and Matsu (the exemption amount is $250.00 for this qualification)

M.G.L. ch. 59, s.5, clause 22A

An exemption of $425 or $4,000 of assessed taxable value of property is available to veterans and their spouses or their surviving spouses who have service-connected injuries of the following categories:

·      Loss or permanent loss of use of one foot at or above the ankle

·      Loss or permanent loss of use of one hand at or above the wrist

·      Loss or permanent loss of sight of one eye or they have been awarded the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy Cross, or the Air Force Cross

M.G.L. ch. 59, s.5, clause 22E

An exemption of $600, or $6,000 of assessed taxable value of property is available to veterans and their spouses or surviving spouses who have, as a result of injury in wartime service and in the line of duty, a disability rating of 100 percent as determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and who are incapable of working.

M.G.L. ch. 59, s.5, clause 22B

An exemption of $775, or $8,000 of assessed taxable value of property is available to veterans and their spouses or surviving spouses who have service-connected injuries of the following categories:

·      Loss or permanent loss of use of both feet at or above the ankle

·      Loss or permanent loss of use of both hands at or above the wrist

·      Loss or permanent loss of use of one foot at or above the ankle and one hand at or above the wrist

·      Loss or permanent loss of sight of both eyes

M.G.L. ch. 59, s.5, clause 22C

An exemption of $950 or $10,000 of assessed taxable value of property is available to veterans and their spouses or surviving spouses who are permanently and totally disabled as a result of a service-connected injury and have received assistance in acquiring "special adapted housing" under the laws administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

M.G.L. ch. 58, s.8A

Paraplegic veterans with service-related injuries or their surviving spouses are eligible for total exemption on their property taxes.
