The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) operates a number of programs that impact Virginians with disabilities:
· Through its Division of Long Term Care, it regulates Nursing Homes and ICF/MRs (Intermediate Care Facilities for Individuals with Mental Retardation).
· Through its Division of HIV/STD, it operates many programs designed to prevent, treat, and care for individuals with, or at risk of contracting, AIDS or other STDs (sexually transmitted diseases).
· VDH's Healthy Virginians 2010 project has begun specifically addressing the health needs of Virginians with Disabilities.
· VDH's Diabetes Control Project seeks to reduce the number of deaths, disabilities and complications due to Diabetes.
· Through its Office of Family Health, VDH is responsible for the Federal Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program in Virginia, which provides supplemental nutrition care and food to low-income pregnant, lactating and postpartum women and children up to age five.
· The Center for Injury and Violence Prevention has a number of programs designed to reduce the risk of disabling injuries from accidents and violence.
· Health Department representatives may participate in the development of school IEP and transition plans for students.
