Substantial Gainful Activity - Medical Assistance - Iowa

Substantial gainful activity (SGA) means performance of significant physical or mental activities in work for pay or profit. Work is either paid in cash or in kind. Profit may or may not be realized. A person with such earnings that exceed SGA is considered not disabled.

See the Federal Substantial Gainful Activity topic for SGA amounts in the current and previous years.

Persons who receive Medicaid because they receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits may, because of a provision called "1619a" continue to receive Medicaid even if their countable earnings are in excess of SGA.

NOTE: More information about 1619a is available in the main WorkWORLD Benefit Information System. See the SSI Work Incentive - 1619(a) topic.

Persons who receive SSI-Related Medicaid, however, no longer are eligible for Medicaid benefits under that group if they have earnings in excess of SGA.
