If you are a SSDI (Title II) beneficiary and your employer asks you to perform fewer or lighter duties than other workers doing the same job for the same pay, you may be able to use the Work Incentive known as a Subsidy.
A subsidy is the support you receive on the job that could result in more pay than the actual value of the services you perform. A subsidy lowers the amount of your countable earned income. SSA subtracts the value of your subsidy from gross earnings before determining if you are performing Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA). If it is determined that you are performing SGA, you may lose your benefits after you have completed your Trial Work Period (TWP) and Grace Period.
See the topic Subsidy and Special Conditions for additional overview information.
See the topic Subsidies and Special Conditions - Clarification for additional description and discussion of what SSA considers when determining if a subsidy is being made and whether or not special conditions apply.
