Earned Income - SSDI (Title II)

SSA considers earned income to be wages earned and net earnings from self-employment. Wages from Sheltered Workshops, Work Activity Centers, Community Rehabilitation Programs and other programs designed to provide employment, activities and vocational rehabilitation to individuals with disabilities are considered earnings.

For SSDI (Title II) purposes, wages are counted as earnings for the month in which they are earned, regardless of when they are paid or received. (This is in contrast to SSI earned income, which is counted in the month the income is received rather than when it was earned.)

If you are self-employed, the SSA does not consider your income alone when determining if you are engaging in Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA), since your actual income may not be the same as the value of your work activity. See Self-Employment Income and SGA for more information.

Contact your SSA Claims Representative to find out the value the Claims Representative would assign to work activity that you are engaged in or considering engaging in.
