Earned income is gross wages paid before payroll deductions, net earnings from self-employment, sickness or temporary disability payments received within the first six months you stopped working, royalties from publication of your work, and honoraria received for your services. It includes payments from Sheltered Workshops, Work Activity Centers, Community Rehabilitation Programs and other programs designed to provide employment, activities and vocational rehabilitation to individuals with disabilities.
As with all currency amount questions in WorkWORLD, the amount you enter for this question should represent a monthly total.
For SSI purposes, earnings are counted when you receive them, not necessarily the same as when you earn them. You could, therefore, work overtime in one month and receive the earnings in the next month. Or, you could have an extra pay period in a month because of the way your pay dates fall.
Earned income may be paid in cash or in-kind. If it is in-kind, its full current market value is the amount used to determine your countable income.
You should not, however include certain earnings. For example, refunds for the Earned Income Tax Credit are not counted. Also not counted are other earnings excluded by federal law, such as some Workforce Investment Act (WIA) [formerly Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA)] programs and some educational work-study programs.
Contact your SSA Claims Representative if you are participating in a federal program in which earnings may be excluded.
If you can not figure the exact amount of your earned income at this time, you may estimate. To use an estimate, 1) click the estimate button; AND 2) enter your best guess for the monthly amount in the correct box.
