SSI State Supplement - Utah

Image of the Utah State Flag. The flag displays the Utah State Seal centered on a blue background and circled by a thin gold line. At the center of the Great Seal of the state of Utah is a shield with a beehive, the state emblem, with a sego lily growing on either side. The sego lily stands for peace. Atop the beehive is the word 'Industry', the state motto. 'Industry' means steady effort. Even prior to Utah gaining statehood in 1896, the image of the beehive and the term Industry were unofficial symbols of the region. The 1847 provisional state of Deseret, which was to become Utah, adopted the beehive as its official emblem, and the symbol carried through as Utah became a part of the Union. The qualities of the beehive (industry, perseverance, thrift, stability, and self-reliance) were all virtues respected by the region's settlers. On both sides of the shield are American flags, showing that Utah supports the United States. Atop the shield is an American eagle, which stands for protection in peace and war. Under the shield the date 1847 represents the year that Brigham Young led a group of people to the Salt Lake Valley to reestablish the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, also known as the Mormons. At the bottom of the seal the date 1896 represents the year that Utah gained admission to the United States. The flag was adopted in 1913.Utah provides State Supplements to Federal SSI benefit payments for residents in one of the living arrangements specified in the table below.
