Multifamily Subsidized Housing Overview

Multifamily Subsidized Housing programs include:

·      Section 811: Supportive Housing for People with Disabilities; and

·      Section 202: Supportive Housing for the Elderly

From the perspective of families renting Section 8 units, renting an apartment in a Multifamily Subsidized Housing project is generally the same as renting under all other Section 8 Project-Based programs. Rental payments, for example, are determined in the same way. (See: Tenant Rent.)

The primary differences are:

·      To be eligible initially for rental assistance in a Multifamily Subsidized Housing apartment, your family must have Gross Non-Excluded Income that qualifies as "Very Low" income in your area for your family size. (Your Gross Non-Excluded Income is your total income after subtracting income exclusions.); and

·      The project and your assistance is administered by the owner of the project, not by a Public Housing Agency (PHA).

·      To be eligible for the Section 811 Supportive Housing program, at least one member of the very-low income household must be 18 years old or older and have a disability such as a physical or developmental disability or chronic mental illness. (Alcohol or substance abuse or an HIV diagnosis, without another disability, does not qualify an individual or family for this program.)

·      To be eligible for the Section 202 Supportive Housing program the very-low income household must include at least one person who is at least 62 years old at the time of initial occupancy.

NOTE: If you are living in or applying for assistance through the Multifamily Subsidized Housing program, then you should substitute "owner" for every reference to "PHA" in the WorkWORLD Information System.

If you are considering applying for Section 8 assistance, enter the information about the unit, your family composition, and your income in WorkWORLD. A Text Result will tell you whether or not you are eligible.

NOTE: If you want to know your income level in comparison with the "Very Low," "Low," and "Moderate" income limits for your location and family size, answer "YES" to the question about that at the end of the housing questions in WorkWORLD. You will get a Text Result "Note" telling you your level and the three limits for your location and family size.
