Income-Eligibility for Section 8 assistance is based on a comparison of your Gross Non-Excluded Income with income limits that are based on the median income for your location and family size.
Your Gross Non-Excluded Income is computed by adding together your family's unearned income, earned income, and income from assets, and then subtracting any income exclusions.
The median income and the limits based on the median are computed and posted annually by HUD at: http://www.huduser.org/portal/datasets/il.htm.
Generally, the Income Limits are:
Very Low 50% of Median
Low 80% of Median
Moderate 95% of Median
In some cases HUD modifies these percentages to take into account special local economic conditions. You can find the calculation procedures used by HUD at the website listed above.
NOTE: If you want to know your income level in comparison with the "Very Low," "Low," and "Moderate" income limits for your location and family size, answer "YES" to the question about that at the end of the housing questions in WorkWORLD. You will get a Text Result "Note" telling you your level and the three limits for your location and family size.
