Government Sites

Federal Trade Commission - Consumer Information Security The Federal Trade Commission has created this website for consumers as a source of information about computer security and safeguarding personal information without fraud and deception. Included is information about maintaining your privacy, guidelines for children, basic Internet terminology, and safe use of email and high speed internet access.

Social Security Online The Social Security Administration's Web site provides information about Retirement, Survivors and Disability Insurance Benefits, and Supplemental Security Income. The site also provides wage reporting information for employers.

SSA - The Work Site (Office of Employment Support Programs) The sponsoring organization for The Work Site is the Office of Employment Support Programs (OESP), a division of the Social Security Administration (SSA). OESP provides a focus within the SSA on matters affecting the employment of Social Security beneficiaries with disabilities. OESP helps people with disabilities who want to go to work. The Web site offers a wide range of publications and other information about topics such as work incentives, rehabilitation and employment programs, and health care for people with disabilities.

SSA - Plans for Achieving Self-Support (PASS) The Social Security Administration's policy and procedure guidelines about Plans for Achieving Self-Support (PASS) are detailed here. You can also find out how to contact a member of SSA's PASS Cadre, and download a PASS application as well.

SSA - Office Locator The Social Security Office Locator enables you to locate the nearest Social Security Administration office based on the U.S. Postal Service zip code where you are. Note that you may need to adjust your browser's security settings or update its encryption functions to access all the features of this site.

FirstGov USA.Gov is the official web portal for the U.S. government, and offers the most comprehensive search of government anywhere on the Internet. Its ever-growing collection of topical and customer-focused links connects you to millions of web pages - from the federal government, local and tribal governments and to foreign nations around the world.

National Council on Disability (NCD) The National Council on Disability (NCD) is an independent federal agency making recommendations to the President and Congress on issues affecting 54 million Americans with disabilities. NCD's overall purpose is to promote policies, programs, practices, and procedures that guarantee equal opportunity for all individuals with disabilities, regardless of the nature of severity of the disability; and to empower individuals with disabilities to achieve economic self-sufficiency, independent living, and inclusion and integration into all aspects of society.

U.S. Department of Justice - ADA The Department of Justice maintains a web page that lists links to many sources of information about the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Library of Congress - Thomas The Library of Congress operates a Web site (named Thomas, for Thomas Jefferson) that contains continuously updated coverage of legislative activity. There is also extensive search and historical capability related to congressional activity.

Library of Congress - State and Local Resources The Library of Congress maintains a web page that contains links to a variety of indices of State government organizations, as well as links to individual State and Local government organizations.

U.S. Department of Labor The Department of Labor Web site gives information about safety, health, and retirement benefits and standards, and employment benefits and standards for employees and employers.

U.S. Department of Labor - Office of Disability Employment Policy The Office of Disability Employment Policy provides the national leadership within DOL to increase employment opportunities for adults and youth with disabilities while striving to eliminate barriers to employment. ODEP was formerly the President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. The website offers information, publications, and links for individuals with disabilities, employers, government agencies, service agencies, and others concerned with employment for people with disabilities.

U.S. Department of Labor - Workers' Compensation Information The Office of Workers' Compensation Programs web page provides information about Federally administered WC programs, such as Federal Employees' Compensation, Coal Mine Workers' Compensation, and Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation. Additionally, summaries of individual state WC programs are available.

FedWorld FedWorld was established by the National Technical Information Service, an agency of the Department of Commerce, to serve as the online locator service for a comprehensive inventory of information disseminated by the Federal Government. It offers a comprehensive, central access point for searching, locating, ordering, and acquiring government and business information.

DisabilityInfo.gov This website is a comprehensive Federal website of disability-related government resources, established when President George W. Bush issued an Executive Memorandum as part of his New Freedom Initiative which directed federal agencies to work together to build a one-stop interagency web portal for people with disabilities, their families, employers, service providers, and other community members.. It provides access to disability-related information and programs available across the government on numerous subjects, including civil rights, education, employment, housing, health, income support, technology, transportation, and community life.

U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforces Federal laws prohibiting job discrimination. These include Section 501 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities who work in the federal government. Also included is Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), which prohibits employment discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in the private sector, and in state and local governments. The EEOC Web site provides information, guidelines, regulations, and public laws related to job discrimination for employers, employees, and educators.

The Whitehouse The Office of the President maintains a Web site that contains information about activities, speeches, and documents from the President and Vice-President. Information about contacting the President and Vice-President via mail, email, or telephone is available.

U.S. Senate The U.S. Senate Web site displays information about legislation, floor activities, committee membership and activity, roll call votes, etc. Each Senator's Web site, with contact addresses, email, and telephone numbers is available from the home page.

U.S. House of Representatives The U.S. House of Representatives Web site has information about current and scheduled floor activities, committee meetings and membership, voting records, and more. Lookup and contact information for each representative is given with links to individual members' web pages.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs The Department of Veterans Affairs operates an extensive Web site with substantial information and many publications related to all types of benefits for veterans and members of their families with disabilities.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development The Department of Housing and Urban Development Web site has much information about housing and rental assistance and voucher programs for people with disabilities and/or low incomes.

U.S. Department of Agriculture - Food and Nutrition Service The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture is responsible for a number of nutrition assistance programs which serve people with disabilities and/or low incomes. Information about these programs, including Food Stamps, WIC, and Food Distribution, is available on the FNS Web site.

Government Printing Office (GPO) The Government Printing Office Web site provides access to many of the legislative, executive, regulatory and administrative documents produced by the Federal Government. These documents include the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Federal Register, Congressional Record, United States Code (USC), and many others.

Presidential Task Force on Employment of Adults with Disabilities (locally archived information) The Presidential Task Force on Employment of Adults with Disabilities was established to evaluate existing Federal programs to determine what changes, modifications, and innovations may be necessary to remove barriers to employment opportunities faced by adults with disabilities. The Task Force reviewed national public policy and provided the President with recommendations on actions that could be taken to advance the employment of adults with disabilities, including legislative proposals, regulatory changes, and program and budget initiatives.

The Access Board The United States Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board is the federal agency that develops minimum guidelines and requirements for standards issued under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA). It develops accessibility guidelines for telecommunications equipment and customer premises equipment under the Telecommunications Act. It also develops accessibility standards for electronic and information technology under section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provides technical assistance on those guidelines and standards, and enforces the Architectural Barriers Act.

Workforce Investment Act Information and Tools Made available by the Employment and Training Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor, this Web site is designed to provide answers to current and emerging questions about the implementation of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA) and its reauthorization. It offers comprehensive information about the One-Stop System and additional links to local One-Stop web sites in each State.



Non-profit Sites

AMSA - Twelve Months of Disability Awareness There are a number of disability-related awareness months, weeks and days. This web page, maintained by the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), provides a list of these days as a way to increase the awareness of disability-related issues. Where available, contact information is given to call or write the appropriate organization to request promotional kits, posters and other available information.
