VA Medicaid Overview

Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) logoVirginia Department of Social Services (DSS) logoMedicaid is an assistance program that helps pay for medical care. Virginia law provides that the Medicaid Program be administered by the Department of Medical Assistance Programs (DMAS). Determination of eligibility for medical assistance and the provision of related social services is the responsibility of local social service departments, under the supervision of the State Department of Social Services (DSS).

To be eligible for Medicaid you must have limited income and resources and you must be in one of the groups of people covered by Medicaid. Some groups covered by Medicaid are: pregnant women, children and people with disabilities. (See Medicaid Covered Groups for more information about who is covered.)

Medicaid is not an insurance plan. It is an entitlement program funded by the State and Federal governments.
