VA Children 1 to 6 Years Old - Medicaid Eligibility

Income Limits

Dependent children aged 1 to 6 years old who live with caretaker relatives, and whose countable family income does not exceed 133% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) are eligible for Medicaid coverage. The countable income is the Assistance Unit's gross earned and unearned income minus Family & Child (F&C) Income Exclusions.

If the countable family income exceeds 133% of the Federal Poverty Level, the children may be eligible as Medically Needy, in which case there will be a spenddown involved.

Resource Limits

There is no resource limit for children aged 1 to 6 who meet the 133% income limit.

Children aged 1 to 6 who do not meet the 133% income limit, and who are in the Medically Needy group, must meet the Medically Needy Resource Limits. (See VA Medicaid Resource Limits.)

NOTE: Although Federal Law permits differentiating between the financial limits for children aged 1 to 6 and those aged 6 to 19 by limiting the eligibility of the latter to 100% FPL, Virginia has chosen not to make such a differentiation.
