Unemployment Insurance - Working Part-Time While Collecting UI - Massachusetts

UI benefits may be supplemented with part-time work if an active work search is maintained and part-time earnings are reported to the Division of Employment and Training (DET).

Earnings are payments in any form for any work or service performed, including self-employment. Even if pay has not been received for this work when signing for benefits, the amount earned must be reported on the certification card.

DET adjusts benefits by allowing individuals to earn up to one-third of the weekly benefit rate (not including dependency allowance) each week before deductions are made from the benefit check.

For example, if the individual’s weekly benefit rate is $270 a week, he or she can earn $90 a week without deductions from UI benefits. If earnings are $120 a week, $90 would be disregarded and $30 would be deducted from the UI check. The benefit check would be $240, plus any dependency allowances.
