Unearned income is all income except that from wages, salary, or self-employment (these types are earned income). It includes gifts, interest, inheritances, pension payments, disability insurance benefits and veterans payments.
For SSDI (Title II) beneficiaries, there is no limit to the amount of unearned income you may receive. Most unearned income will not reduce your SSDI check. However some unearned income, such as Workers' Compensation and public disability and government pensions, may cause a reduction in your monthly disability check. Therefore it is important for SSDI beneficiaries to report the source and amount of all unearned income.
For SSI recipients, your SSI check is reduced one dollar for each dollar of unearned income you have. However, SSA does not include some unearned income when deciding whether to reduce your SSI cash benefit. The first $20 of unearned income is excluded. Also excluded are Food Stamps, Housing subsidies and any State benefits that you may receive because you have low income. A complete list of the unearned income that SSA excludes is in the topic "SSI Unearned Income - Exclusions".
